Louis Vuitton Teases a New Collaboration with Jeff Koons

START

When Jeff Koons debuted his “Gazing Ball” series at Gagosian Gallery in 2015, it sparked a firestorm of controversy. The artist meticulously hand-painted 35 reproductions of European masterpieces and placed a range of either aluminum or blue glass “gazing balls” in front of them. Koons claimed the series was meant to make these already iconic paintings more communicative with the public, but many questioned the intent behind the series—was this really art or just a publicity stunt?

Regardless of public discourse, Louis Vuitton has partnered with Koons on new series of handbags, inspired by the paintings. Titled “The Masters Collection,” the line features classic LV bag silhouettes like the ‘Speedy,’ ‘Keepall,’ and ‘Neverfull’ with the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and Vincent Van Gogh printed over them. The various paintings serve as the background to the name of its responding artist, which LV’s printed in bold letters like a brand name. Koons’ initials are also on each bag, along with a minimized version of the house’s monogram stamp.

“There’s so much freedom in working with Louis Vuitton,” gushed Koons in an interview posted on LV’s website today. He continued: “There’s also a reflective process about the person being interlinked with the bag. I would hope that when somebody walks down the street with this that what they’re doing is they’re really celebrating humanity.”
Vuitton will hold a dinner celebrating the release at the Louvre in Paris tonight. Following that, the full range of handbags will be available to purchase from LV stores on April 28th. In a statement, the house hinted that the collab is the first of many between itself and Koons and promised “further chapters” later on
