What to Wear When Attending an Italian Gothic Wedding in Tuscany

Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.

Springtime is peak wedding season. As invites continue to flood in, one of the most arguably daunting parts involves the fashion element, particularly if your presence is requested in some exotically far-flung (and expensive) destination, like Mexico, the Caribbean, Australia, or somewhere in Europe. We’re partial to the latter—namely, Italy’s west coast of Tuscany, due to its many magnificent cathedrals and chapels, rolling hills, seaside views, immense cultural and artistic history, and top-notch cuisine.

The photogenic region—and its capital city of Florence—has been a longtime wedding destination for the celebrity set (CR cover girls Kim Kardashian West and Kate Upton both tied the knot there), and one of the dreamiest Tuscan matrimonial ceremonies took place in 1955, when Ira von Fürstenberg, former princess and sister-in-law to Diane von Fürstenberg, wed to Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and celebrated aboard a lively wedding gondola complete with her bridesmaids of Tuscany’s finest gondoliers. With films like A Room With a View, The Portrait of a Lady, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet all being set there, who wouldn’t want to revel in nuptial bliss under the Tuscan sun? Below, find CR’s top picks should you find yourself drawn to la dolce vita.
