Remembering the Work of Edith Head

Edith Head dressed some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, designing costumes for dozens of films from the mid 1920s until her death in 1981. Her keen eye helped construct our vision of Old Hollywood, as she was versatile in creating costumes ranging from simple and sophisticated to dramatic and flamboyant. Head became the chief designer at Paramount Pictures in 1933 and later took her talent to Universal Studios. During her career she was nominated for over 30 Academy Awards and won a record number of eight, which is still today the most Oscars won by a woman. Here, CR looks back on 20 of the costume designer’s most memorable credits.
