What to Wear When Dancing Through Havana

START

Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.

Americans have long flocked to the Caribbean region’s capital, drawn to Havana’s rich culinary scene, impressive Spanish colonial architecture, and shadowy footprints of revolutions past. Ernest Hemingway famously lived in Havana (and, as he did in Sun Valley, Idaho, wrote a portion of To Whom the Bell Tolls there), while Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Carmen Miranda, Winston Churchill, and Marlon Brando all visited, albeit controversially. More recently, Beyoncé and Jay-Z celebrated their wedding anniversary there in 2013, and the Kardashian sisters even visited in 2016. On the fashion front, Karl Lagerfeld chose Havana as his preferred destination for Chanel’s Cruise 2017 show. (He’d shoot the campaign there, as well.)

The city is oft-considered a unique blend of old and new, with chic hotels and fancy restaurants slowly popping up alongside old cigar factories and crumbling buildings. Whether you’re spending the day exploring the Spanish capital’s revolutionary sites and reconstructed mansions or smoking cigars and sipping a daiquiri (or three) at El Floridita, Hemingway’s favorite haunt, consider this your all-encompassing sartorial guide to getting to know the colorful, sun-soaked city that’s been relatively untouched.
