What to Wear When Going On a Road Trip

START

Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.

Imagine a time, long before Uber and fast food drive-thru, when traveling was a glamorous adventure. In the earliest days of road trips, at the very beginning of the 20th century—yes, long before Google Maps—drivers got from A to B with the help of a turn-by-turn road guide, Official Automobile Blue Book. Roads were unpaved, street signs were rare, and the earliest car models did not come equipped with windshields or hardtops. Often, their cabs were exposed to the elements.

As a result, distinct items were developed to protect drivers from the hazards of the open road. Roomy and wrinkle-proof car coats became de rigeur, and women obviously started matching their heavy overcoats to their car. Driving gloves also became a must-have in an era before power steering, and eventually became a status symbol.

But even as clothing evolved through the centuries—the boxy silhouette of the ’20s and ’30s graduated to ladylike prints and slim silhouettes in the ’40s and ’50s—travelers were still putting ample thought into the outfits they wore. When you go to embark on your autumnal road trip—especially if you’re venturing out to pick apples—consider dressing for the occasion. And we don’t mean donning a pair of cozy cashmere sweats. Instead, pull together an entire look, channeling the glamorous adventure you’re about to embark on. Safe travels!
