For their Salon 03 collection, Bottega Veneta travelled to a rather unexpected location for fashion: Detroit. After first visiting “Motor City” six years ago, Bottega Creative Director Daniel Lee became fascinated with the city and has since been keen to collaborate with its residents. Detroit is perhaps most famous for its rich car manufacturing history, designing and building some of the most beautiful automobiles the world’s roadways have ever seen and leading the American architectural modernism movement.

Likewise, the city was at the forefront for the development of American retail and served as a hub for both musical innovation and social change, birthing the iconic Motown sound and playing an important role in the racial integration of pop-culture. Thus, Detroit has a rich past, laden with ingenuity in the realms of creativity and design. Growing up in the industrial North of England, Lee was fascinated with the Michigan city’s technical and inventive spirit and, with his Salon 03 collection, aims to celebrate the innovation of the Detroit community.

The show was held at the historic Michigan Theatre, whose mammoth size is undoubtedly a testament to the cultural and historic importance of the classic American city. Built in 1926, it has been a witness to Detroit’s rise to prominence and development from the very beginning of the United States’ global economic domination.

The collection itself, was defined by an overwhelming sense of momentum and progress, yet Lee still managed to stay true to several house classics. For instance, high-tech sportswear-inspired looks featured heavily. A pale blue tracksuit communicated a dual sense of classic athleisure and futuristic minimalism, while a knit white mini dress with a thick fringed bottom seemed to emulate a tennis skirt in an innovative manner. Several oversized matching sets, with billowing parkas made their way down the runway in a variety of clean, cool-toned shades. They too reflected an athletic and forward-thinking mindset.

Lee seamlessly combined his celebration of industry and progress with house staples through the form of metal yarn, which appeared with several dresses and jackets throughout the show. At the same time, he used the brand’s traditional knits for the construction of tracksuits, again mixing the label’s classics with the city’s technical and future-oriented nature.

To continue its collaboration with the Detroit community following the show, Bottega Veneta has established a creative retail space at 1201 Bagley St dubbed The Firehouse, which is situated in an old fire station. This new space also features the work of local artists, designers, and curators that will aptly and holistically represent the city’s burgeoning creative community. Thus, with the Salon 03 collection and newly-established retail space, Lee and the Bottega team have been able to honor Detroit and its innovative spirit in a novel, fashion-oriented way.
