After a rough past couple of years, it’s fair to say that everyone could use a beach vacation. Being able to don fun, bright colors and recharge in a tropical climate sounds euphoric as we exit an extended period of panic and lockdowns. With her latest collection, Isabel Marant actively plays into our collective desire for a beachy retreat, with garments that scream summertime not only in color, but also silhouette.
However, more than just looking vacation-ready, Marant’s collection harkens back to one of the most universally fun and carefree eras: the 1980s. Considering the temporal and environmental inspiration for the show, it wouldn’t be impossible to mistake the models for chic extras from the set of Miami Vice, as they were sent down the runway in pastel shades that are most often found in South Beach, parachute silks, shell suits, and dynamic patterns.
Perhaps the best representation of this effortlessly cool 80s aesthetic were the blousy silk jumpsuits that appeared in sunset shades of yellow and cream at various points throughout the show. Likewise, the oversized orange and turquoise short shell suits paid homage to the era, but in a more subtle and casual way.
Throughout the collection, Marant also presented pieces that flawlessly merged this inspiration with house classics. For instance, a light pink lace top with dynamically patterned board shorts saw both a return to the brand’s signature boho style and experimentation with typical 80s beachwear. At the same time, a metallic silver bikini top was paired with bedazzled oversized white shorts, further blending the past with the present.
Needless to say, this season, Marant brought the most cool and fun aspects of 80s summer style back in the most chic way possible. Considering the doom and gloom of the recent past, this aesthetic is uplifting and speaks to the public’s overwhelming escapist and celebratory desires. Simply put, they’re fun clothes for fun times in the future. All you need now is a floral-printed boom box and lace-covered roller blades and you’re ready for summer 2022.
