After stops in London, Shanghai and Chengdu, Dior’s exhibition, “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams,” has finally made its way to New York’s Brooklyn Museum for its first time to be viewed in America.
Created by Florence Müller in collaboration with Matthew Yokobosky, the exhibition comprises over 70 years of Monsieur Dior’s iconic vision that has transcended generations of womenswear while also featuring never-before-seen pieces from the house’s vast archives.
The exhibition opens transporting the viewer from 30 Avenue Montaigne to New York City chronicling how Dior’s Parisian haute couture vision was translated for the American fashion eye. Guests are immediately greeted with Dior’s classic bar suit also known as the “new look” which revolutionized women’s dress providing the perfect starting point to dive into the show’s rooms. The exhibit dedicates a full room to American visionary photographers who captured Dior garments in breathtaking images. Richard Avedon’s iconic Dovima With Elephants is surrounded by an array of captivating prints from some of the house’s favorite imagemakers, including Irving Penn and David LaChapelle – to name a few.
The exhibit’s main room offers a dazzling spectacle at how Dior’s vision was captured by the house’s preceding creative directors. From Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano to Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the space analyzes the connection between new and old visualizing the house’s incredible journey through fashion. Ornate gowns from each designer’s reign are placed strategically showing how each era differs from the last. Art pieces from some of Dior’s favorite artists are also places throughout the gowns.
Opening night for “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” at the Brooklyn Museum attracted a star-studded guest list of celebs dripping in their own version of Dior. Celebrities like Lorde and Yara Shahidi wore modern iterations of Dior’s “new look” while A$AP Ferg and James Turlington sported laid-back suiting paired with sneakers and crossbody saddle bags.
Elsewhere, Dior’s love for gardens and flowers provided inspiration for the verdant surroundings for opening night. An army of topiary “new look” dresses stood around the event space as if guarding the exhibition. Antique garden furniture adorned with blush roses were set up for guests to lounge while sounds by DJ Kittens filled the air from a grass-covered DJ booth.
The exhibition and its opening event invited guests into the mind of Dior offering up a dreamlike sartorial escape that presented far more at ease than the hustle and bustle of New York Fashion Week. 75 years later, Dior’s initial vision for women’s fashion comes together in a way that analyzes the past while looking to the future continuing to keep the magic alive.
“Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” is now on view at the Brooklyn Museum until February 20, 2022. Tickets are available for purchase on brooklynmuseum.org.
