Kimye is alive again, whether they’ve rekindled true love, or just their shared love of a fashion spectacle. Kim Kardashian (still) West joined Kanye’s performance at the final DONDA album listening party on Friday at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium, appearing in none other than the Balenciaga wedding gown from Demna Gvasalia’s haute couture debut collection, and the house’s return to couture after 53 years.
The rapper first laid eyed on the finale look when he attended the July show in his black Yeezy X Gap Round Jacket and balaclava. Gvasalia, a longtime friend and creative collaborator of West, served as the creative director for the second DONDA event at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The ex-couple matched in full-body Balenciaga at each show. At the first, Kardashian wore a custom look in red, inspired by a draped jersey dress and Pantashoes from the Fall/Winter 2020 ready-to-wear collection, complete with a zipped-face gimp mask, while he wore a red edition of the Round Jacket and Yeezys. At the second, she wore a sleek all-black ensemble of a turtleneck and Panstashoes, and another full-head gimp mask with a braided ponytail sticking out. ‘Ye wore head-to-toe Fall/Winter 2020, including a rubber-spiked jacked inspired by Siberian bear-hunting quilts from the 1800s, during his performance on a set that replicated his room in the basement of stadium.
West’s third and final presentation of the album was, no surprise knowing him, full of surprises. The event culminated in him setting himself ablaze and walking around the to-scale replica of his childhood home, for which the album is named after his late mother. Kim, who filed for divorce in February, stepped out moments later to organ music, the final song of the night called “No Child Left Behind,” like any other walk down the aisle, looking ethereal in the glowing veil. The two stood together briefly, West beaming, before the lights went out. Fans speculated online that it was a renewal of their wedding vows, though it may be an autobiographical element the rapper included in the presentation, like his recreated Chicago home. Whatever the case, there’s still love between the two, as Kardashian gladly stands as a muse. The bride, with a discernible braided ponytail, wasn’t verified to be the reality star until sisters Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian posted pictures on Instagram from the audience.
Gvasalia’s couture gown is a recreation of one by Cristobal himself in 1967, now residing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the crisp fabric is held together by a single seam. It’s an important symbol of the house’s heritage, which represents the innovative construction and timeless craftsmanship the founding designer is remembered for.
The album dropped Sunday before West’s approval, he revealed on Instagram, finally bringing his years-long 10th album teasing to a conclusion. Kimye, who left hand-in-hand, may be about to legally separate, but wouldn’t it be so them to get remarried for real, once it’s final?
