The late Azzedine Alaïa’s legacy is transformed in the Maison’s latest show.
Since the designer’s passing in 2017, the house has been working off of Alaïa’s own archives. This show marked Pieter Mulier’s debut as Creative Director of the label, with free reign to decide the direction of the design.
And still, for his first show, Mulier chose to pay homage to the legendary designer. “An homage to Alaïa — man, master, maison — and to femininity, which Azzedine Alaïa cherished and championed above all else,” the house said in the statement.
Mulier keeps the traditional femininity and sensuality the label is known for, with figure-hugging silhouettes, hooded capes, and waist-cinching accessories. Mulier, a friend and partner of Belgian designer Raf Simons, also added a touch of edge and graphic streetwear that modernizes his Alaïa debut.
The result is a harmonious marriage that brings Alaïa fully into the present while honoring the roots of the maison.
