Jana Julius is a nomad. As a 20-year who has modeled since she was a teenager, she’s everywhere and nowhere in particular at once, never staying in one place for long: “I don’t live anywhere really. I sometimes stay with my boyfriend, sometimes with my parents…but mostly I just travel around,” she tells CR. Growing up in Germany, she was discovered at the age of 18, and has since worked with a studded slew of designers under Wilhelmina management–including Vivienne Westwood, Jil Sander, and Sonia Rykiel. The model recently stopped by the CR office to talk about her nomadic existence, her love for Jil Sander, and why other models think she’s from Russia.

Tell us about how you were discovered.
„My ex-boyfriend was working at a party, it was an after-party in Germany and I came to visit him. And my mother agent was there and he walked up to me…he was really drunk at the time [laughs] but told me that he worked with all these big clients, like Chanel. And the rest is history.“

You’ve been around for a while now. What is your favorite memory in modeling so far?
„I got to see Stonehenge at 5 a.m., which was just incredible. We went inside of the Stonehenge for a shoot that I can’t talk about because it’s not out yet, but it will be in January…I think [the result] will be amazing.“

You’ve also walked in a lot of shows during the latest fashion weeks. Do you have a personal highlight?
„I think it was Jil Sander. I was just really happy I got to do that, because I really love her as a designer. The simplicity and the timeless qualities of her designs.“

Who are your other favorite designers?
„I love Yves Saint Laurent…Calvin Klein is also quite nice. Oh, and Miu Miu is maybe one of my all-time favorite brands. I’ve been really close to getting to work with them but it’s fashion, so it’s unpredictable.“

You have a wonderful personal style. Where do you find inspiration?
„I don’t follow any bloggers or anything. I don’t have a style icon, to be honest. But I kind of like the ‘70s and ‘80s British vibe, that boyish, British style.“

What’s your go-to outfit when you’re in a rush?
„I just dress depending on how I feel that day, because I have different ideas in my head and it also depends on what I’ve brought with me to a certain place. I like a lot of really cheap vintage shopping, like things under five euros [laughs]. I don’t spend a lot on fashion to be honest. Some Miu Miu, though.“

What’s something we wouldn’t know about you?
„The first impression people have of me, when they hear that my name is Jana, is that they think I’m Eastern European–but I’m German. Many think [my name] is Yana with a ‘Y’, so a lot of Russian models think that I’m one of them and I always have explain and tell them: ‚Sorry, but I’m German.’“

Why did your parents name you Jana?
„They were thinking of Kim, but there was a cigarette brand named that at the time so they were like ‘No we’re not gonna go for Kim, we’re gonna go for Jana, it’s safer!’“

Do you have any hobbies outside of fashion? When you’re not working?
„I like to listen to music and read. I try to read more and more, remind myself to do it. But I don’t have any big hobbies right now, that’s the thing when you’re modeling, you’re somewhere and doing something…but on the other hand you’re doing nothing, so I’m trying to read at least. Right now it’s Harry Potter, which I used to read when I was 11 and I loved it, so I’m revisiting that now.“

What are your plans for the future? Do you think you’ll stay in fashion?
„I don’t know, I want to figure out what to do with my life. There are so many things one can do and it’s so confusing! You can do anything so it’s overwhelming, and it’s stressing me out. But I’m young so I have some time. I know I want to study and find something I’m really interested in, and get some knowledge about it. Sometimes I think about staying in fashion in some capacity but I change my mind a lot.“
