If Dior ever asked Alyssah Paccoud to dance–she would likely turn them down: “I took [lessons] in school when I was little…but I’m not good at it,” she tells CR. Dancing aside, as a recent high school graduate growing up in Alberta, Canada, the 18-year old model already has a packed resume up her sleeve. After entering the hustle and bustle of fashion just over one year ago, Paccoud has already walked for the crème de la crème of high profile heritage houses–from (yes) Christian Dior to Burberry, and beyond.
On a gloomy fall afternoon in downtown New York in between castings, CR sat down with the it-model-in-the-making to talk about fashion, feminism, and her dream of one day living in a secluded house up in the Rocky Mountains.
You started modeling one year ago, how do you like it so far?
“It’s been good. I used to be really shy so it’s helped me with being a lot more sociable, and get out of my shell.”
You’ve already walked some wonderful shows. What was your favorite to be part of this past season and why?
“I really liked walking for Dior. There were dancers and everything, I loved how they made it into an event. And the energy backstage was just amazing.”
Who do you look to for style inspiration?
“I don’t know a lot of famous style people, but my best friend, who I’ve known for a long time, is just the most creative in terms of style. She always finds such cool ways to use clothes. She just has a good eye, she doesn’t follow fashion necessarily, but she’s a very creative person and that comes out in her style.”
Do you see yourself staying in modeling?
“I don’t know…I really like it a lot, and I think it’s helping me grow as a person. But there are some parts that I disagree with in this industry. In terms of feminism, there are some areas that could still improve a lot.”
Any examples?
“Just like the general attitude. [Fashion] has very unrealistic standards for women, and having models who are always super skinny kind of upholds that image in not a super healthy way.”
Yes, the age issue has also been discussed a lot recently, with France making it illegal to hire models under 18. Have you noticed any result of that law in the past season?
“I feel like that’s become more a thing of needing the models to be 18, and I’m glad that’s happening. I know there are still some shows which accepted girls who are 16 or 17, and I feel like that’s okay. I know Burberry was very [strict] about having to be 18. They weren’t accepting anyone otherwise. We have been making progress, but we still have a long way to go.”
Do you have any other career aspirations except for modeling?
“Yeah, I would love to study physics. I really love science in general, and I definitely will do stuff with that at some point. I’d also love to have house in the mountains someday, secluded and just…live there. In the Rocky Mountains, maybe.”
