On a sunny mid-September day 65 years ago, a reporter and socialite from Southampton wore 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta as she walked down the aisle of a Catholic church in Newport, Rhode Island. Her dark brown curls were pinned up under a rose-point lace veil, and in her hands was a bouquet made up of pink-and-white orchids and gardenias.
However, this wasn’t just any girl hosting a lavish, late-summer wedding in Rhode Island. Neither was she marrying just any man. The bride’s name was Jackie, his name was John, and their wedding would mark the beginning of one of the most iconic marriages of all time.
