Everything We Know About Halston

“I have a vision. I’m going to change the face of American fashion” Halston — played by Ewan McGregor — remarks in a newly unveiled trailer for Halston. The Netflix limited series will document the meteoric rise and heartbreaking fall of America’s first celebrity designer — Roy Halston Frowick.

Through minimally luxurious ready-to-wear, Halston catapulted to international fame in the 1970s and set the aesthetic tone for the decade’s burgeoning disco era. The enigmatic designer was a regular at Studio 54 — mingling with the likes of Liza Minelli, Bianca Jagger, and Elizabeth Taylor who donned his breezy clothing that “danced with you.” After ill-advised business decisions, the designer lost control of his once-flourishing house in the 1980s. Though Halston passed away due to AIDS-related complications in 1990, the designer would live to see his undeniable influence on the American fashion industry — influencing the minimalism boom at Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Ralph Lauren.

Starring in the limited series is Ewan McGregor — known for his role in Star Wars — who takes on the dynamic role of Halston. A recently released trailer outlines the premise of the series — unbridled glamour, tragic downfalls, and fashion moments to boast. As the trailer progresses, Halston becomes increasingly detached while navigating the realities of drug addiction, stardom, and complicated relationships. Also featured in the series are close Halston confidants and partners — Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez,) Joel Schumacher (Rory Culkin,) and Eleanor Lambert (Kelly Bishop.)

Although the newly released trailers and promotion leave much to the imagination, the limited series is set to be all the talk in the coming weeks. The series is co-produced by Ryan Murphy whose prior Netflix ventures — Ratched and American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace — were sartorial hits that combined fashion know-how and captivating storyline. If the Halston trailer’s flowing gowns, structured menswear, and delectably ‘70s accessories are any inkling into the quality of the series, we are in for a treat.

Though Halston is often overshadowed by powerhouses like Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Tom Ford, the quirky designer had an undeniable sway on the American ready-to-wear industry. His freeing silhouettes and ultrasuede designs redefined the ’70s discotheque aesthetic all while his personal life played out like a blockbuster Hollywood movie. Breakdown, but make it fashion.

Halston comes to Netflix on May 14.
