Celebrities from the ’90s and Early Aughts Loved Henri Bendel

START

After 123 years, Henri Bendel announced last week that it’ll close all 23 of its stores after the holiday season. Bendel was a hat maker from Louisiana and opened his first store in 1895 in Greenwich Village. The luxury brand expanded to cosmetics, handbags, and accessories, becoming the first store to have an address on upper Fifth Avenue, the first to hold a semi-annual sale, the first to have its own fragrance, and the first to stage a fashion show. Bendel was also credited for introducing Coco Chanel’s designs to the U.S., pioneering in-store displays and makeovers, and hiring Andy Warhol to design his illustrations.

Several of your favorite celebrities were also known for loving Bendel’s iconic brown-and-white striped boxes back in the ’90s and early ’00s. Bendel was the host to several famous soirees, ranging from book and fashion launches to fêtes attended by the rich and famous (and even an unexpected handbag collaboration with Monica Lewinsky.) To honor the soon-to-be-defunct retailer, CR rounded up some of our favorite celebrities who used to frequent Henri Bendel back in the day.
