Bella Hadid is no stranger to speaking her mind. The model has previously opened up about her struggle with Lyme Disease and her high-profile breakup with The Weeknd. Today, she’s revealed her feelings about growing up in mixed-faith home for the first time. She said she was motivated to shed light on the issue following President Donald Trump’s recent Muslim travel ban.
It’s likely that you’re familiar with Bella’s mother, Dutch model Yolanda Hadid, but the backstory on her father, Mohamed Hadid, is less well-known. Bella’s dad is a Palestinian-born, Muslim, real estate mogul who came to America as a refugee when he was just 14. In an interview with Porter Magazine, the 20-year-old model explained how her father’s immigration experience influenced her reaction to Trump’s faith-targeted sanctions. “My dad was a refugee when he first came to America, so it’s actually very close to home for my sister and brother and me,” she said. “He was always religious, and he always prayed with us. I am proud to be a Muslim.”
This is the first time that the 20-year-old model has spoken explicitly about her faith, but she’s been a vocal opposer of Trump since he won the U.S. Presidential Election in November. In January, both Bella and her sister Gigi joined anti-Trump protestors in New York City, holding a sign that read: “We are all Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Christians, Jews.”
