Ryan Murphy is making a new installment of American Crime Story about the murder of Gianni Versace. The first series of the show was a blockbuster hit, going behind the scenes of the O.J. Simpson trial in the mid ’90s. The show focuses on a different infamous crime each season and this time around, Murphy is traveling to Miami to follow the late designer in the last days of his life in 1997, as well as explore the psyche of Versace’s assassin, Andrew Cunanan.
Filming for the season is slated to begin in April. Already, Edgar Ramirez has been cast to play Gianni and Darren Criss will play Cunanan. In the latest announcement today, it’s been confirmed that Penelope Cruz will play Donatella. It was previously rumored that Lady Gaga would take the role, but in light of her newly released album and upcoming tour she likely wasn’t free. Cruz has tackled many strong female roles in her time as an actress, but whether or not she’ll be able to nail our favorite formidable blonde remains to be seen.
