Kim Kardashian West Looked to a Wet Sophia Loren for Her Met Gala Look

CR cover star Kim Kardashian West came through dripping at tonight’s Met Gala…quite literally. On theme with her recent obsession with all things vintage (she’s not the only one), West stepped out in a nude latex number adorned with dangling beads—hence the “drip” reference—designed by Thierry Mugler. It reportedly took eight months to make.

This is a pretty major moment not only for West, who’s been seen sporting a lot of archival Mugler as of late, but the French designer, too, as it’s his first design in two decades. (He stepped down from his eponymous label in 2010, with Nicola Formichetti taking over. Casey Cadwallader currently helms the house.)

Like fellow Met Gala attendee and fashion plate Céline Dion, West looked to Old Hollywood for inspiration—specifically, Sophia Loren in the 1957 Jean Negulesco-directed film Boy on a Dolphin. With wet strands and a seemingly liquid ensemble, West may not have embraced the theme as blatantly as Dion, but she nailed Loren’s sexy-diver look look to a T. No word yet on whether or not this signals a return for Mugler, but he certainly hasn’t lost his camp-y touch.
