Before the huge dot-com boom of the early ’00s, Kristen Noel Crawley remembers having cystic acne as a 15-year-old. Growing up in a small town, her options were limited to department stores until she started traveling when she turned 18. In Tokyo, she discovered a brand called Kinebo, which had a double-cleansing and moisturizing treatment plan. “It was really cool, like a science project for your face,” she tells CR. “You’re mixing and matching to find the right combination and products for your skin. I got really into it in my early 20s and I noticed my skin was getting better.”
It was also in Tokyo where Crawley discovered lip masks for the first time. Inspired by the product, but put off by the artificial ingredients, she decided to create her own mask, infused with collagen, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid, and called her skincare line KNC Beauty. The pink stretchy masks, which came in an efficient lip shape, became ubiquitous on Instagram and found fans in stars including Kim Kardashian, Luka Sabbat, and Emma Stone.
Here, Crawley breaks down her skincare favorites, what’s next for KNC Beauty, and how she’d like to see the beauty industry change.
Walk me through your skincare routine.
“In the morning, it’s pretty light. I just cleanse and I put on a serum. I use the Dr. Barbara Sturm Foam Cleanser just because at night, I do an intense routine, so my face is pretty clean. In the morning, I’ll just double cleanse with the foam cleanser and then I do a hyaluronic acid serum either from Sturm or Stacked Skincare. After that, I’ll do this papaya serum from this young girl who hand-makes all of her own beauty products out of Arizona. It’s called Take Care Beauty Co. and it’s three or four ingredients, organic, natural, and really great. I’ll use the Sturm SPF drops and you just mix it with whatever foundation you’re using for the day. I actually have a lip balm coming out for KNC Beauty, so I’ve been using that religiously for the past few months. For nighttime, I start by double cleansing and use the Skinceuticals Replenishing Cleanser. Then, I’ll do the Joanna Vargas Exfoliating Mask or the Dr. Sebagh Deep Exfoliating Mask. I’ll put on two different serums, the Epidermal Growth Factor Activating Serum and the PSC Peptide Serum, which promotes skin renewal and regeneration. I’ll do a night cream and it depends on the season. In the winter time, I’ll use that thick La Mer cream.”
What about makeup products you’ve been loving?
“I actually just started working with Revlon, and I’m obsessed with the lip colors that they have. It’s the ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in the shade Supermodel. For foundation, it depends. If I’m going out for the night and I want a heavier look, I’ll use the Dior Forever Foundation. If I want something lighter, I’ll use the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation mixed with their highlighter. I have this blush from La Prairie, their Cream Radiance Blush in Berry Glow, that’s my holy grail product. I always need a brow pencil to just fill in a little bit. I like the YSL one in dark brown. And then, of course, mascara, like Diorshow mascara or the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.”
What has helped your skin the most?
“Not necessarily a product, it’s more about consistency. There are times when I don’t feel like doing a full routine or I don’t feel like washing my skin at night or in the morning, and that’s when I notice I have breakouts. There are a bunch of products that I love and that work on me, but it’s about consistency and making sure I do my routines and that my skin is clean. For me, that is more important.”
What inspired you to want to create masks?
“I feel like our motto is clean, simple, cute, and fun. You can put the lip mask while you’re scrolling through Instagram or responding to emails. It’s the beauty brand for the modern-day woman. A lot of women don’t have time to do a skincare routine, and if you put the lip mask and the eye mask on, you can be multi-tasking while you’re doing your self-care.”
Where do you see KNC Beauty going next?
“We’re definitely trying to grow right now. We’re launching three new products this year, which is really exciting, and my dream collaboration coming out this summer. We’re trying to expand our product line from not just masks. It’s just about making the best product. Lip masks already existed before I put mine out, but I wanted to make the best version and to make it good for you.”
Do you see a bigger movement towards clean beauty?
“Yeah, I hope so! That’s why I created KNC Beauty, because I saw a lip mask somewhere and loved that idea. I’m from the Midwest, we have crazy winters, and my lips were really badly chapped. I liked the idea, but when I looked at the ingredient list, it was full of chemicals. I think what a lot of people don’t know is that there are really no regulations in the cosmetics and skincare industry, which is scary because skin is our biggest organ.”
How would you like to see the beauty industry change?
“I feel like Rihanna really disrupted the industry when she launched Fenty Beauty, because not only were there shades for the darkest skin tones, but there were the lightest skin tones, too. Women and men with albinism could use it. I don’t think they really had that option before. [I’d like to see] the beauty industry become more inclusive of people and not just making five different concealer shades anymore. You see brands like Milk Makeup putting non-traditional models in ads, like a guy with a face tattoo and a green buzzcut and it’s really refreshing. I’m really liking all the diversity I’m seeing. It’s making these big brands like L’Oreal and Maybelline change their ways, because they have to keep up with these young new brands that are like, We’re not gonna let you control this anymore.”
