Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia’s Fall/Winter 2019 collection for Oscar de la Renta was inspired by travel—namely Córdoba, Spain. To mirror the design duo’s lineup this season, which saw CR girls like Bella Hadid and Grace Elizabeth storm the catwalk at Cipriani in carpet-like textures, rich jacquards, and fresh takes on the house’s classic evening-wear codes, makeup pro Tom Pecheux and hair expert Odile Gilbert conjured up a beauty look that’s every bit as dreamy and travel-minded as it is fitting for Valentine’s Day tomorrow.
In addition to a bit of shimmery bronzer on the eyelids and what Pecheux calls a “vintage-red lip,” models’ tresses oscillated between soft, brushed-out curls and sleek, low ponytails adorned with intricate barrettes or satin ribbons. “She likes to take all these beautiful treasures home from her travels: souvenirs, memories, a little clothing,” Pecheux tells CR backstage. “She’s very open-minded; she’s inspired by different cultures, different religions, and different types of beauty.”
To achieve a just-stepped-off-an-international-flight look, Pechuex nixed heavy mascara, blush, and any contouring (“If she did contour, you won’t be able to see it—it’s a secret between the girl and herself,” he says), and instead simply spread a thin layer of MAC’s Face and Body Foundation and a few dabs of Studio Fix 24-Hour Concealer on the face before lightly dusting it with translucent powder. From there, Pecheux mixed two lipsticks together, putting MAC’s liquid lipstick in Feels So Grand in the center and dabbing a matte lipstick in an earthy, nude shade around the edges with a Q-tip. “I want the lip to look faded and a bit blurry,” he says. “Like she’s been traveling for a long time and is feeling super relaxed.”
Not only is the look achievable sans romantic getaway or exotic solo trip, but it’s a testament to the versatility—and confidence-boosting elements—of a classic red pout. “Even if you don’t want to hide under a lot of makeup,” Pechuex says, “what better way is there to express power and femininity than with red lipstick?” Touché.
