Everything’s bigger in Texas, especially the hair. For Spring/Summer 2019, native Texan Brandon Maxwell decided to back to his roots and was inspired by the big, voluminous hair often sported by cheerleaders at football games. Even though Texas didn’t invent towering hair (see: Marie Antoinette), the trademark “Texas blowout” quickly caught on in the South during the ’80s.
Maxwell was also inspired by a young Brooke Shields, with feathery, cascading hair. The models, including CR girls Gigi Hadid, Grace Elizabeth, Joan Smalls, and Bella Hadid sported deftly blown-out strands. To match the all-American Texas tailgate-themed venue and designs, hairstylist James Pecis pinned back hair for models with natural or curly texture into clean buns and rope-braid chignons, topped with gold-colored B hair accessories cheekily shaped into bottle openers.
“Brandon has always been a big advocate for having the different girls in the show have different textures for diversity, but this season, all the girls who have curly hair, we took it back into a really clean and small ponytail,” he says.
For the blow-out element, Pecis coated the models’ heads with Oribe Maximista Thickening spray and used a Dyson blow dryer and a round brush to create volume and lift from roots-to-ends. “It shouldn’t feel wavy,” he says. “It’s supposed to be clean, beautiful, and no deliberate parting. The collection also coincides with Maxwell’s Texas-themed Mac Cosmetics collection, consisting of a neutral-toned eyeshadow quad, a rosey-nude lipstick, and a pinky gloss. To achieve the “baby Barbies in Texas look,” lead makeup artist Tom Pecheux applied M.A.C. Studio Waterweight foundation on clean skin and used hands to conceal any under-eye circles with Studiofix 24-Hour Smooth Wear concealer. He then dotted highlighter, along with a pearl cream color base, onto the cheek and brow bones for a glow-y effect.
“If there’s one thing I respect and really appreciate is that women in Texas love makeup,” he says. “We decided not to make Texas a joke because there’s nothing to laugh about it. The women are wearing gentle and very soft makeup.”
